Eating serotonin rich food increases serotonin production. Tryptophan is an amino acid that
converts into serotonin. Foods that are rich sources of tryptophan are turkey, chicken, salmon,
eggs, nuts, seeds, and cheese. Eating tryptophan rich food with carbohydrates increase absorption of tryptophan in the brain. Sunlight exposure for 10-30 minutes daily in the morning can stimulate serotonin production, circadian rhythms, and boost the mood.
Walking, running, and swimming are exercises that reduce the level of stress and increase
serotonin levels. Meditation will reduce the level of stress as well. Nature connection and spending time in nature, laughter and positive social interactions, social bonding, quality of sleep, avoiding excessive alcohol and caffeine intake can increase the level of serotonin.
However, taking supplements such as tryptophan should be recommended under a healthcare
professional. Vitamin B-Complexes, especially B6 and B12 can regulate the serotonin
production.
Following a healthy diet and lifestyle will improve the brain and overall mental well-being and
prevent depression, anxiety, and neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s.
